ELLC Required Courses

Students in the ELLC are required to take the following courses:

Fall Semester

LDSP 1000Fundamentals of 21st Century Leadership3 credit hours

This course introduces students to the theoretical, cultural and ethical dimensions of leadership and its application to social issues of our time. The course is designed to provide students with an academic knowledge of leadership and a set of leadership competencies, and to serve as a lab for active dialogue and experimentation in a range of leadership situations. Students will:

  • Develop a broad understanding of leadership theories and perspectives 
  • Demonstrate understanding of oneself and others and how ones values and beliefs impact leadership
  • Craft a personal philosophy of leadership and followership
  • Examine, evaluate and apply ethics, integrity and character to the reality and challenges of today’s world
  • Recognize the influence of culture on leadership practice and develop culturally competent leadership skills
  • Focus on the principles of social change leadership

This course is required for ELLC students working toward a leadership certificate.
Approved for: Arts and Sciences ideals and values core requirement.

LDSP 2910-ELLC Practicum1 credit hour

Students will meet once a week in this 75 minute class to interact with one another and share their experiences, perspectives, thoughts and ideas as they work toward building and sustaining community and practicing culturally competent leadership within a multicultural setting. Students will be challenged to step outside of their comfort zones and explore their beliefs, values and socialized ways of being around race, culture, gender and difference. Throughout the semester the practicum will incorporate learning from LDSP 1000 - Foundations of 21st Century Leadership. 

This course is required for ELLC students working toward a leadership certificate.  This course is an elective and may be repeated for up to 6 total credits.

 


Spring Semester

LDSP 2410 - The Dynamics of Privilege, Oppression and Empowerment in Leadership

Examination of the theoretical framework of social identity development, individual- , group, cultural- and institutional- power dynamics, and the resulting inequalities formed by systems of privilege and oppression.  Application of theory to both how specific forms of privilege and oppression – and their intersections - are manifested in society and how leadership is used to continue these systems or lead to empowerment and liberation.   

This course is required for ELLC students working toward a leadership certificate.
Anticipated Approval for: Arts and Sciences Contemporary Societies core requirements

 

LDSP 2910ELLC Practicum1 credit hour

A continuation of the fall semester practicum. Students will me once a week in this 75 minute class to interact with one another and share their experiences, perspectives, thoughts and ideas as they work toward building and sustaining community and practicing culturally competent leadership within a multicultural setting. Students will be challenged to step outside of their comfort zones and explore their beliefs, values and socialized ways of being around race, culture, gender and difference. Throughout the semester the practicum will incorporate learning from the two leadership classes:  LDSP 1000 - Foundations of 21st Century Leadership- Understanding Privilege and LDSP 2400 - Oppression in Contemporary Society.

This course is required for ELLC students working toward a leadership certificate.  This course is an elective and may be repeated for up to 6 total credits.


Also offered for our students:

LDSP 2820- Multi-Level Issues in Leadership: Global Civil Society – 3 credit hours

This course is designed for students interested in the international civil society. Students will identify different forms of civil society in various locations. They will learn about the efforts of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and Community Based Organizations (CBOs) that operate in both developed and developing countries to influence democracy, free association, and/or increased political and societal pluralism. Additionally, the course will focus on NGO management and governance issues and contrast where civil society is promoted with countries where there are strict controls and limits on the activities of NGOs. Cross-sector strategies involving civil society, business and government will also be explored.

This course counts as lower division elective for ELLC students working toward a leadership certificate.
